So much depends...

A couple of summers ago I needed to paint my badly rusted black wheelbarrow.
I had a full can of Benjamin Moore's "Country Redwood", a dark oxblood paint I had used to touch up my front door.
I thought it would be a nice color on the wheelbarrow and then it dawned on me: it would be an image right out of one of my favorite poems by William Carlos Williams, "The Red Wheelbarrow":

so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens.

So simple and imagistic, but so multi-layered, you can read into the poem whatever you think is so important that 'so much depends' on it. I decided to not only paint the thing red, I added a little extra something to make me smile whenever I'm out in the yard with it digging around in the dirt. No chickens but it does get rainwashed every now and then :)
